Well, there were only a couple of alternative keyword tools until recently, Nichebot and Keyword Discovery but lately they've been springing up like spring crocuses. Here's the two already mentioned plus some more;
Good like the others, say Wordze or Keyword Discovery, are good but, like the others, you'll really have to go through the (multiple) features and check it out for yourself. I will say in its favour, though, something that does distinguish it from the others is that founder Jim Morris does do a rattling good newsletter. I subscribe to it myself and the very fact that you're here, I believe, establishes my UK SEO credentials. I read this guy's stuff every month. Nichebot. And hey, get this; a training video! It's very good; Nichebot's Webinar
Some serious players swear by this and I can see why now I've finally got into it. A comprehensive method of searching out niche markets and making them work for you. There's nothing else like it on the market, their approach is unique. Try Market Samurai now!
Brilliant - I use it all the time. Gets its info from the Google Keyword Tool.
Rather more than just the Adsense Keyword Research Engine, these days, they say, there's PPC Keyword Research and the SEO Keyword Research Tool as well! You should spend time with Keyword Country to get the flavour of the various offerings, in my view.
Keyword Elite 2 - the new version!
Brad Callen's very latest offering. Brad has a very sound marketing background that he leverages fully in the design and execution of his software. I find all that marketing off-putting myself but I have to say once you can get past it to the product, well... I finally got SEO Elite and I use it all the time now. I've no doubt that for many Keyword Elite 2 will be a worthwhile investment.
Wordz up! I gave it a go and I like it! I suppose it could be because it's a change from the others. It does its job well and it seems as accurate as any of the others. Worth the subs, I'd say. Usefully, they do a Competitor Analysis video, a keyword research video, either or both of which might convince you to subscribe

I haven't had time to get into the latest version of KeywordSpy but I've heard some good reports of it. Check it out.
The idea behind this is there are two kinds of searchers, one who looks for information and the second who have made up their mind and are looking to buy something specific. These people will use a different more focussed set of keywords and phrases. The guys over at Buyer Keywords Generator reckon they've got a handle on those phrases. I haven't used this myself (not enough hours in the day to do everything) but I do hear good reports of it. There are videos available (free ones) that I hear are really good. You may well learn a lot just from watching them. Buyer Keywords Generator. Check it out now.
Again, I've never tried this one. Their free trial is down, I'll come back to it.
This is from Trellian, very heavy duty.
I don't get on with this but a lot of people do. What do I know, eh?
Another newbie I didn't get the time to try out yet.
Another new kid on the block, the more the merrier I say. I've given the free version of this a go and I like it for its presentation, so one day maybe I'll give the paid version a go.
I tried the free version and I wasn't impressed. I can't see what it does that others don't already do. However, it's very new so let's give it some time, eh?
Currently the governor. Make use of this tool mach schnell before it morphs into a pay-only version!
A new but popular arrival on the free keyword tools scene.
The AddMe Keyword Suggestion Tool
Powered by Keyword Discovery.
Always worth a look.
Trellian's Keyword Discovery Tool
No sooner had Overture bitten the dust than Trellian came out with this free offering. Very good it is too.
And indeed, finally, no sooner had Overture etc. etc. than Wordtracker themselves came out with this scaled-down free version of its main Keyword tool. For many, this will be the tool they need, I suspect that outside of determined niche-hunters few people will now need to make use of Wordtracker's paid service. The best alternative to Wordtracker is now, er, Wordtracker!
Watch that niche! Very useful, on my list of regulars.
Spy on them key words and phrases.
No good for multiples but maybe the best for a one-shot.
Google's own trend-spotting keyword tool.
Well... this isn't exactly a keyword research tool but you'd need to be plenty dumb not to have this in your toolkit.
Well... this isn't exactly a keyword research tool either but, similarly, you'd need to be dumber than Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels combined not to use it. How long is a piece of string? How high is the sky? I don't know either but with this tool I can find out how many times people are asking for those and any other phrases related to the keywords/phrases my site might be built around. Get that long-tail traffic sewn up!
Folds out and does (nearly) everything.
Another new kid on the block, the more the merrier I say. I've given this one a go (free option anyway) and I'll be using it regularly.
I tried the free version and I wasn't impressed. I can't see what it does that others don't already do. However, it's very new so let's give it some time, eh?
The Wordstream Niche Keyword Tool
Fancy ploughing a profitable niche during the recession? Explore the infinite possibilities with this useful addition to Wordstream's growing arsenal of keyword research utilities.
Another one! This one doesn't get a great deal of publicity but I've found it useful.
This tool searches the top 10 in Google for a phrase you like to rank highly for. Then it collects all the text from these 10 result pages and calculate the most used words and phrases on these pages. It then orders them by number of times used. With this data you know exactly why these pages rank highly in Google. It's all about theming and using LSI Keywords. (They say! - BB)
Shablast gathers the top ranking documents from Bing and analyses them to see which documents give the best cross-section of information found in all of the documents. The documents are resorted and presented in that order to you. That means the top ranking documents in Shablast provide the best overview of the subject, meaning you need to visit fewer pages to get the information you're looking for (They say! - BB).
Collects info from Google, Amazon, Yahoo and others. Inspirational
It's a drop-down suggestion tool, works the same as Google Suggest in searches ordinaire when it's enabled.
Same as the Google Keyword Tool.
See what's trending and do specific keyword searches.
Get an alert when someone tweets your keyword then you can jump into the conversation.
And if you're quick about it you can follow the conversation by clicking on the stream here.
Or catch it on here :-)
The mistake many people make is in saying "Most people are searching for the term 'fred blogs big widgets' and so we'll have to cater to them even though we have only just arrived on the internet scene and there are already hundreds of thousands of existing sites doing just that, a handful of them very well established and realistically unshakable, - and we have no more money".
If this sounds anything at all like your business model you have one and only one remedy.
Get more money!
When you've done that, spend it on keyword research.
Do the research that the competition didn't do and find that search term both related and sought-after that there's very little competition against. You can then use that to attract people to your site.
Like, for instance and going back to our earlier hypothetical scenario, "big widgets by/from fred blogs". Doing that means you still get to sell your goods and, together with a sensible internal linking structure and plenty of inbound links, you can ably compete against the big boys.
You can't do that unless you've properly researched your keywords.
