You might be wondering, if I'm any good at getting a good Google listing, how it is that Steve Johnston, who some of you will recognise from his appearance on television's Dragon's Den show, is listed at no.1 for the term "Google Consultant" and I'm critically lower, being only (by comparison) in and out of the top ten for the term?
Like so much in SEO, I can't tell you with absolute certainty. My opinion would be though that one reason is his much smaller site is focused a great deal more than mine on the specific terms "Google" and "consultant". Let's check that theory out by going to KeywordCount.com. We can check for how many times the words "Google" and "consultant" appear in Steve's site compared to mine right now (Boxing Day 2006). My guess is they're going to be found there with far more frequency than they are in mine. Yup, in Steve's site "Google" itself is the most common word with 39 appearances giving it a presence of 3.47%. "Consultant" is at no. 23 with 5 appearances giving it just 0.45% of the total. On my site we don't know what the incidence of the words are but we can easily determine with the same tests that they aren't even in the top 100, would you believe!
Now if I were to change the many instances where I've used the term "engine" or "search engine" for "Google", then I would think it very probable, all else being equal, I'd be listing just as high or higher than Steve does for "Google Consultant". Why don't I? The real question is, Why Would I Want To? I'd lose all the good Google listings I have for terms including "search engine", "search engine optimisation UK", "UK search engine optimisation", "search engine marketing", "search engine optimisation" etc. etc. plus, I suspect, - and at this time more important - all the variation listings like "SEO UK" and "SEO consultant" which together are worth far, far more than Google Consultant. They get much more traffic, you see.
Less traffic means less potential clients. That means that in this instance I'm better off staying with the good Google listings I already have.
