When you've done that, spend it on keyword research.
Do the research that the competition didn't do and find that search term both related and sought-after that there's very little competition against. You can then use that to attract people to your site.
Like, for instance and going back to our earlier hypothetical scenario, "big widgets by/from fred blogs". Doing that means you still get to sell your goods and, together with a sensible internal linking structure and plenty of inbound links, you can ably compete against the big boys.
You can't do that unless you've properly researched your keywords.
