Searching for the best SEO Firm?

If they're a professional SEO firm, they must be good, then, right?

Yes, if they're in business and they've lasted, they must be good at something but that isn't necessarily SEO! They have to be good at making money admittedly, but that's different. Running a business is one skill, providing a service is another, different skill. Many people have marketable skills but lack either the interest or the business acumen to profit from them. It doesn't mean they're bad at it by any means. I could direct you to a girl who makes rugs, a guy who tunes pianos professionally and a weight-lifter who runs a gym. Any of these people could give you useful SEO advice. But they aren't professional SEOs, they have no wish to be. The upshot is that you may well get just as good a service from the hobbyist on the corner as you could from the professional in the High Street - a lot cheaper, too.

If an SEO firm is in the top ten for "search engine optimization" in Google, they must be really, really good, yeah?

No again. Some of them undoubtedly are, but some of them I think are rip-off merchants, pure and simple. How do they survive? They survive by being there, which means they're visible, which means people see them, which means people think they must be good, which means people give them work, which means they get more inbound links, which means they stay there. Which means they're visible... if you wonder how they got there in the first place, then, you might want to read Google is broken my thoughts on the subject. Being as prominent as they are for any particular search term means they used to be good, not that they are now.

If an SEO firm has testimonials, they must be ok surely?

Testimonials from whom? Are they genuine? I've seen testimonials that were from companies who never existed, who had things like "This site is down as the company haven't paid the hosts their hosting fees" when you clicked on their testimonial link. I've seen a testimonial from a company seemed to be thrilled that an SEO firm had apparently got their little store to the number one position in a whole heap of search engines. None of these engines, sadly, were Google, Yahoo or MSN, the big three that generate the traffic. So the testimonial really meant nada.

Hey look! This SEO firm not only submits your new site to Google, MSN and Yahoo, they submit to thousands of other engines too, so they must be good, right?

(Sigh) no. The other engines mostly aren't worth being in in terms of traffic (Teoma is an honourable exception here, but you still don't need to submit to it) and both the big and the small ones will find you anyway if you have an inbound link from a site already in their index. Like, for instance, my one...more of my thoughts on search engine submissions can be perused if you wish to study that aspect of an seo firm in more detail. If you want a link to your site, by the way, you could try my page about getting listed in Google.

This SEO firm got a lot of sites to top rankings back in the day, so they must still be good now, right?

They probably do have a lot of sound advice. The basics remain the same, build a content rich site, big is better than small, keywords prominent in title, description tag, header tag, throughout the text, etc. etc. The basics now are the same as they were years ago. But the nature and manner of search engine procedures has changed a great deal, largely due to the abuse of the basics by the unscrupulous. The stress placed upon Google upon the anchor text of inbound links has increasingly become a factor, some would say an overriding factor. An historical record of search engine optimisation success is not an automatic blueprint for future prominence. SEO is not an industry where anyone can rest on their laurels; they very quickly become irrelevant to both contemporary and future endeavours.
